VAZHAI POO KOOTU/ BANANA FLOWER SIDEDISH

The banana tree is such an awesome tree. Not only can we use the entire tree, the health benefits of doing so is just amazing.

In this post we’ll be cooking and eating the flower.

Cooking as such doesn’t take time. It’s the cleaning the poo/flower that takes time.
BUT…

totally worth it.

Now off we go to the recipe.

INGREDIENTS

Vazhai poo/ banana flower 1

Onion – 1 finely chopped

Dried red chilly 3

Tumeric powder a pinch

Jeera/ Cumin seeds 2 tsp

Mustard seeds 1 tsp

Urad dal 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves 1 sprig

Oil 1 TBsp

Salt to taste

METHOD

Clean the vazhai poo carefully. Chop them and soak Β in water. There are umpteen tutorials to guide you online. Check them out. My favorite was this.

Gather all the ingredients.

Heat oil in wok.

Splutter the mustard seeds, jeera , Urad dal. let the dal turn brown.

Add dried red chilly and Curry leaves.

Throw in the onions. Salute till they turn brown.

Add tumeric powder, salt.

To this add the chopped vazhai poo/ banana flower. Add v little water.

Cover the wok with lid.

Cook till Vazhai poo is soft and done.

When it’s raining and cold…

When you don’t feel like cooking an elaborate meal….

When you have left over idlies….

Idly upma is the solution.

Here’s the recipe. It’ll take about 5-7 mins to cook.

INGREDIENTS

Left over idles – 5-6

Onion – 1 chopped

Green chilly – 1 sliced

Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Paneer – 50 gms cubed (optional)

Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

Broken Urad dal – 1 tsp

Channa dal – 1 TBsp

Tumeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Salt to taste

Oil – 1 TBsp

METHOD

Gather all the ingredients.

Crumble the idles and set aside.

Heat oil in a wok.

Throw in the mustard seeds. let it splutter.

Followed by urad dal and chana dal.

Saute in medium flame till the dal turns brown.

Throw in the chopped onion and green chilly, curry leaves. Saute.

When the onions are 3/4th done, add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.

Add the dice paneer. Give it a good stir. Don’t cook the paneer for long. It’ll turn rubbery.

Add the crumbled idlies. Mix well for few mins.
